I admit I have a very short attention span.
I’m an information junkie. I want to know as much as possible as quick as possible.
Many blog readers can agree that no one wants to read a long, drawn out About Me page.
I strongly believe your About Me page should be similar to an elevator pitch: short, sweet and straight to the point.
In this post I will tell you how I created an About Me page that’s an easy to read attention grabber.
When I started writing my About Me page I was stuck. I couldn’t figure out exactly what I wanted to say or how I wanted to say it.
What I found the most difficult was describing myself! I mean shouldn’t I know myself better than anyone else?
I suck at knowing myself.
Actually you will find out more about who you are based on what others say and think about you. (Preferably those that you spend a lot of time with such as your friends and family.)
Before I got started, I thought back to when I was in college. I had a professor who assigned our class a project in which we had to ask 10 people to describe us in as few words as possible. It was a pretty cool experiment because it granted us insight on how we are truly perceived by others. ( It is also heartwarming to hear how awesome you are coming from your friends and family ).
With that in mind, I began to craft my About Me page.
How to Create an About Me Page for Your Blog
First, I posted a recent photo. You always have time to change it later so just slap something up there so your readers know what you look like.
Second, I started with a simple introduction such as “My name is Lisa”. Why? Because I want my audience to know my name of course!
Next, I wanted to describe myself in terms that showed my relationship to the most important people in my life. I also wanted to include information such as my current career. Writing this in their order of importance, I wrote ” I am a mother, wife and Realtor.”
To give my readers a sense of locality, I added my location which is currently the DMV. ( DC-Metro-Virginia Area). I wouldn’t recommend getting too specific because we all know that there are “crazies” out there.
Then, I thought about the special qualities and quirky traits I am known for (thinking back to the college assignment). I’m a southern girl, born and raised in Georgia. Several people tell me that I laugh a lot and I love food.
I described the 2 things that I find the most pleasure in such as my current hobbies which is writing and helping others.
Next, I tell my readers what my blog is about and what I hope they will gain from reading my posts.
And finally, I end my page with a warm welcome and closing.
My About Me page is complete and I high-five myself because I’m freaking awesome.
Now you want to read over everything, delete fluff words and shorten some of your sentences.
Your goal here is to be as direct as possible.
As a quick recap, below are a few questions you should ask yourself to complete your About Me page.
- Introduction What’s your name/nickname? What do you want to be called?
- Who are you in relation to others? What’s your current occupation? Where do you live?
- What are your 3 special qualities? What 3 things are you known for?
- Why did you create this blog? What are you passionate about?
- What do you hope your blog accomplishes? What value will this blog give to the reader?
So there you have it, how to create an awesome About Me Page for your blog.
Keep it short and sweet.
